A hammertoe is a general term which is normally used to describe a type of toe deformity. It is defined as a contracture or bending of one or both joints of the second, third, fourth or fifth toes. This disease commonly starts as a gentle deformity & gets worse over time. The early stage of this disease is flexible and the symptoms can often be controlled with noninvasive measures. If hammertoe is left untreated, they can grow and become stiff to a greater extent and require surgical treatment. In this stage corns are more likely to grow as time passes on and they never really go away. Hammertoes usually cause pain because the joint itself may become dislocated.
Symptom:
- A curling toe
- Toes bent into hammer shape
- Difficulty finding shoes that fit well
- Irritation & pain in toe when wearing shoes
- Corns on the top, side or end of the toe or between two toes
- Calluses on the bottom of the toe or on the ball of the foot
- Thickening of the skin above or below the affected toe
- Pain and difficulty in moving the toe
Causes:
- Hereditary
- Ill-fitting shoes
- muscle imbalance
- An injury in which you jam or break your toe
- Bunions are a major cause of hammertoes

Hammertoe is a distortion or deformity of the toes, result of a muscle imbalance between the top and bottom tendons of the toe. It can be flexible or rigid in nature. If it is a rigid hammertoe, it is not easy to straighten the toe out by manipulating it. So make sure to select comfortable shoes because this disease most often develops from wearing uncomfortable or bad fitting shoes that can force the toe against their tip for example, too high heels or shoes that are too short or tight for the foot. This unnatural bending can put pressure on the toe when wearing shoes, causing hammertoe to develop.
